#9 Ten Million In Coins
One fortuitous couple in the Sierra Nevadas came across the discovery of a lifetime one morning while taking a stroll with their dog through their backyard. Roaming around their Gold Country backyard, the couple noticed a submerged, decaying canister covered in dirt. After they dug it out with a stick, they soon found the canister to be filled with a surprising stack of twenty-dollar gold coins…dating back to the mid-to-late 1800s! They rushed out to their yard and found another seven cans, all filled with gold coins varying in face value from 5 to 20 dollars. More than 1400 coins were discovered in total and would’ve been worth 27,980 dollars when they were originally minted. But seeing as these golden coins were well over a century old and in nearly perfect condition, the collection showed to be worth much more when it was valued at an incredible 10 million dollars! These remnants from the Gold Rush era of California’s history are now referred to as the Saddle Ridge Hoard and is one of the largest collections of gold coins ever dug up on U.S. soil.
