Thanks to crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, a lot of weird, ridiculous, and baffling projects that would never be bought by mainstream manufacturers can find their audience. We’ve covered a lot of them. This project, though, might be the trippiest we’ve seen.

A Canadian startup called Outline Montreal has created a sound reactive LED mask that is appropriately called The Sound Reactive LED Mask. If you’re an avid Kickstarter-watcher, you may recognize these light up masks. An older version of the project was successfully funded in 2015. For the new masks, Outline Montreal collaborated with artists Patrick Seymour and BÜRO UFHO on some truly startling designs. Most of them are animals, but you might recognize the face of a certain former president in there as well.

The mask utilizes phosphorescent ink and a sound reactive lithium modulator to create an effect that the mask is illuminating in sync with music. EDM fans and festival goers seem to be the target audience, though the Kickstarter page does include some high-minded language about the importance of masks throughout history and a quote from Descartes. Outline Montreal clearly believes they’re doing important work.

While we may not go that far, as long as they’re not too uncomfortable to wear we could see these being a big hit at festivals and dance parties. Outline Montreal has addressed comfort issues that 2015 backers had by shrinking the size of the modulator and locating it at the back of the head strap instead of in the mask itself, so it looks promising.

The Sound Reactive LED Mask seems like the kind of thing that when you see it you either think, “WTF is that?” or “That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.” The project was fully funded in under 24 hours with more than 3,000 backers and climbing so clearly it’s resonating with people.

If you’re super into the idea of wearing a light-up Obama mask, more power to you. A pledge of $35 CAD (about $28 USD) will get you any of the eight designs. More designs are unlocked with stretch goals, so if you see one on the list that you definitely want but it’s not available yet, you can keep checking. The project wraps up on February 6 and continues to steadily gain backers every day.

We’re slightly creeped out by these, but no judgments if it’s totally your thing.
